SUMMARY:Interpreting in Legal Settings Preparation and Protocols
DESCRIPTION:Description\nA workshop for medical interpreters who interpret in legal settings. Participants will be provided with basic legal terminology\, be instructed on proper interpreter protocols in legal settings\, learn how to do independent terminological research to find accurate translations\, become aware of the skills and certification needed to work in legal settings\, and will be able to develop professionally as a result of their newly acquired skills and knowledge. \nLearning Objectives: \nAt the conclusion of this session\, participants will be better able to: \n\nParticipants will be able to identify the protocols that apply when interpreting in legal settings.\nParticipants will be able to create bilingual legal glossaries using a four-step method to ensure accuracy.\nParticipants will be able to define the specific interpreting skills needed for legal settings.\nParticipants will be able to prepare to work in the legal field and thus expand their professional horizons.\n\nEducation Level: Intermediate to Advanced \n\n\n  \nAbout the Trainer\nSteve Sanford has been a court and conference interpreter for 25 years and is currently a Regional Coordinator of Interpreter Services for the Trial Court of Massachusetts. He is certified as a Portuguese court interpreter by the National Center for State Courts. He was an instructor in Boston University’s Interpreting Program from 2005 to 2021\, helped Language Connections create a legal interpreter training course\, and is currently an instructor of Legal Interpreting in the UMass Amherst Online Translation and Interpretation Program. The Interpreter’s Gym\, his Soundcloud page\, provides free access to audio files for interpreters to practice with. Steve has also trained and mentored new court interpreters and led workshops in simultaneous interpreting and other topics. As a Senior Member of the Translation Committee of the Trial Court’s Office of Language Access\, he participates in the translation of court forms and information. He was one of the Portuguese Language Division’s Distinguished Speakers at the 2010 ATA Conference and has presented at several New England Translators Association conferences\, as well as at the 2018 and 2019 AHEC Paving the Way Conferences. He is on the Board of Directors of the New England Translator’s Association. He has interpreted for former presidents of Cabo Verde and Brazil\, and also for Nixon. Nixon da Silva\, that is. \nCredits/Contact Hours\nApplication for continuing education credits at CCHI/IMIA has been submitted and is pending approval. \nWorkshop Fees\nWorkshop Only: $35.00\nCEU Fee: $45.00 ($41.62 fee + $3.38 service fee)\nWorkshop + CE Credits: $ 80.00 \nSuccessful Completion Requirements\nParticipants are expected to sign-in and out\, attend the entire program\, and complete an evaluation.
