SUMMARY:Advanced Topics – Liver Anatomy and Physiology
DESCRIPTION:This 3-hour interactive workshop provides a comprehensive overview of liver anatomy and physiology for medical interpreters\, with an emphasis on common liver diseases and the liver transplant process. Participants will learn the liver’s role in the body\, from its basic anatomy and functions (e.g.\, metabolism\, detoxification\, and bile production)\, to understanding key clinical terms like ALT\, AST\, and bilirubin. The program will review a range of liver pathologies (viral hepatitis\, alcohol-related liver disease\, autoimmune and genetic conditions) with focused discussion on Metabolic-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) (formerly NAFLD)\, and cirrhosis. An in-depth section will demystify liver transplantation – including indications for transplant\, the waiting list and MELD scoring system\, surgical process\, and post-transplant concepts like rejection and immunosuppression.
