DESCRIPTION:Description\nIn this 3-hour workshop\, through discussion\, lecture\, and hands-on exercises\, students of medical interpreting will learn to approach their note-taking techniques in a methodical way. They will analyze output\, compare their notes to the original utterance\, and come away from the class better equipped to interpret in the consecutive mode in a medical setting. \nLearning Objectives: \nAt the conclusion of this session\, participants will: \n\nReview how to use consecutive notes in a medical setting.\nPractice creating notes that reflect analysis.\nDemonstrate paying attention to key words\, structure\, and making ideas pop off the page.\n\nEducation Level: Intermediate to Advanced \n\n  \nAbout the Trainer\nAthena Matilsky holds a BA in Spanish interpreting and translation from Rutgers University and a Master’s in Conference Interpreting from Glendon College. She is a Federally Certified Court Interpreter (Spn<>Eng)\, a Certified Healthcare Interpreter (Spn<>Eng) and an Approved Court Interpreter (Frn<>Eng). She was editor-in-chief of Proteus in 2015 and she served as a staff interpreter for the NJ judiciary from 2013-2016. Currently\, she works as a freelance interpreter/translator and trains candidates for the state and federal interpreting exams. SUMMARY:Special Education Meetings: The Roles of Interpreters in Individualized Education Programs: Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Education Level: Intermediate to Advanced \nThis is a 3-hour workshop focuses on a review of the most relevant information technical terms\, vocabulary\, and team due process in the special education field\, adapted specially for interpreters that provide services during Initial team meetings\, eligibility determination\, annual reviews\, reconvenes\, and mandatory re-evaluations. \nLearning Objectives \nMedical interpreters participating in this training program will be able to: \n\nIdentify the different types of special education meetings\, including the content reviewed\, the evaluation processes and types of evaluations.\nIdentify the basic principles\, key terms\, and technical vocabulary used in special education.\nIdentify the most effective interpreting modality (i.e.\, consecutive vs. simultaneous interpretation) and protocols for a given special education encounter.\nRecognize the sequence steps in the eligibility determination process for disability categories and disability determination for special education services.\nDescribe how an IEP is developed and evaluated.\nDefine placement.\n\nAbout the Trainer \nDr. Cheryl Ortiz holds a Doctor of Philosophy. Currently\, she is an Evaluation Team Chairperson for the Worcester Public Schools. Dr. Ortiz represents the school district in Initial\, annual and reevaluation team meetings\, determines eligibility for Special Education Services\, and maintains compliance standards for state and federal regulations regarding Special Education. Prior to her current role\, Dr. Ortiz served as a Bilingual Special Education Teacher\, an ELL Literacy Enrichment Academy Coordinator\, and as a Bilingual Learning Disabilities Specialist. In these capacities\, her role was to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs for learning disabled students. \nSuccessful Completion Requirements \nParticipants are expected to sign-in and out\, attend the entire program\, and complete an evaluation.
