What is the CHW Core Competency training program?
This training focuses on the 10 core competencies for Community Health Workers established by the Massachusetts State Board of Certification of CHWs. The 12-session course provides individuals with information they will need to become a certified Community Health Worker. It includes 10 sessions of core topics and 2 sessions of specialty health-related topics.
How long does the program take to complete?
Usually the program last 12 weeks and is offered in one full-day session per week with some variability due to holidays. Other scheduling formats may be available for partner agencies or grant-funded courses.
Who is eligible to take the training?
You do not need to be a healthcare worker or have prior medical experience. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and work for an eligible health or social service organization. Life experience and a passion for helping your community are the most important qualifications.
Is there financial aid available for the program?
From time to time, grant or scholarship funds are available to support individuals’ participation on a case-by-case basis.
Is the training online or in-person?
Most courses take place via Zoom using a camera and microphone. CHI may also offer in-person or hybrid lessons to organizations on a case-by-case basis as determined by client organizations’ need or grant funding.
Is there an attendance requirement?
Yes. Participants must have a webcam and participate in class activities to be counted as present for class and must attend 11 out of 12 sessions in order to be eligible for a certificate of completion.
Is there a final exam?
No, there is no final exam.
Does completing this training make me a certified CHW?
The training on its own does not, however, completing the training is a major step towards certification. The MA State Board of Certification of CHWs also requires additional criteria, such as past work experience and recommendations.
Are there CEUs available for the training?
Not for the Core Competency training. For individuals who get certified by the Massachusetts State Board of CHW Certification, CHI offers many other training topics that offer CEUs.
What kind of jobs can I get after finishing?
Graduates work as Community Health Workers, outreach coordinators, peer educators, or Promotores de Salud in clinics, hospitals, and local non-profit public health organizations.
